Last night we told you about the ongoing eruptions of St. Vincent and the Grenadines La Soufrière volcano. It's a catastrophic event that's caused widespread evacuations and ashfall as far as Barbados.

It's ashfall that the island's media houses caught Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves standing under today as he gave his country and indeed the world an update on the volcano's impact while looking forward to a cleanup process that, at the moment seems insurmountable.

And Belize is doing its bit to help out our sister CARICOM nation, with the Cabinet pledging US$50,000 to the Government and people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to aid in relief efforts and humanitarian resources as required to assist with the disaster response plan on the ground.

A release from G.O.B today also says quote: "Belize welcomes Vincentians who have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the seismic activity and who may have ties to Belize through family or friends in accordance with the determined requirements for entry including COVID-19 protocols." End quote.

The Belize Red Cross is also appealing to the public to donate funds towards emergency response operations necessitated by the ongoing eruption.
