Tonight, the Government of Belize is joining other nations in condemning the assassination of Jovenel Moïse, the President of Haiti.

Reports out of Haiti say that the President and his wife were at their home in Port-au-Prince when unidentified gunmen stormed his property yesterday and opened fire on them. The president was fatally injured.

Today in the Senate the Minister of Foreign Affairs outlined Belize's position:

As viewers will remember, Haiti has been beset by widespread protests over the last few months with citizens calling for President Moïse's resignation. He took over leadership of the nation back in 2017.

Courtenay discussed those difficulties:

A release from the government this evening says the Government of Belize orders that all national flags and CARICOM Standard flags are flown at half-mast for three days starting today, July 7, 2021. The Government of Belize joins the Caribbean Community in this symbolic gesture of condolence as the people of Haiti mourn the death of President Moïse"
