Tonight, war rages on in Ukraine as Russian soldiers move further into Kyiv, destroying buildings and taking lives.
Thousands are evacuating, heading to Slovakia or Poland or…just about anywhere that will take them. And one refugee has travelled over 6,000 miles, landing safely in Belize.
Oleksandra Petryna grabbed whatever she could out of her home in Kyiv before travelling west, to the Slovakia border, only to be turned away.
She was too far away from the Poland border and decided to head to Hungary instead. From the border, she was 18 hours before she was stuffed into a train and taken to a village, where she was given a free plane ticket to Budapest.
From Budapest she travelled to Amsterdam then reconnected with a friend living in Belize. Once in Amsterdam, she caught a flight to Cancun where she stayed overnight before finally landing in Belize this afternoon. Courtney Menzies was at the airport and spoke to her about the journey from a warzone to the other side of the globe.
Area rep, Julius Espat, and Senator Osmany Salas also played key roles in Petryna's journey.
