We know the Sapodilla Caye Range is on the map as part of Belizean territory on the map - but who really owns it? Well, Guatemala and Honduras claim those lovely isles and now the International Court of Justice will decide.

Belize has officially applied to the Court to seek a final and binding resolution, in accordance with international law, of the dispute between Belize and the Republic of Honduras concerning sovereignty over the Sapodilla Cayes.

The opposition had called for a referendum before such a decision was taken to go to court, but it has proceeded, as expected, without that.

In a statement, government says it's doing this in support and furtherance of friendly relations with Honduras and also to quote: "protect the vital interests of Belize in ensuring the full and final settlement of all outstanding territorial disputes to Belizean territory." End quote.

This additional ICJ case now joins the Guatemalan claim over all of Belize's territory that is already lodged before the court. The resolution of the Sapodillas case could end up slightly delaying the larger territorial dispute.
