The Belize Territorial Volunteers, we regularly catalogue their Sarstoon exploits on this newscast. But tonight they have gone global with a major article in the New York Times.

Highly critical of the Guatemalan Armed Forces - who regularly harass the volunteer son Belize's side of the Sarstoon, the article - which was published today - is named "This Centuries-Old Border Dispute Pits an Army Against Unarmed Volunteers".

It says "The territorial claim is creating jitters in one of Central America's most lawless corners."

The article says that Journalist Simon Romero spent several days in Belize, and he accompanied the BTV on one of its trips down the Sarstoon.

He details a typical encounter with Guatemalan military saying, quote, "We were in Belize, our GPS signals showed…But then members of Guatemala's military, clad in camouflage and berets, spotted us. Pulling up in their own boat, they grasped rifles, index fingers close to the triggers. "You've just entered Guatemalan waters!" The story builds as you might expect from there. We expect it to cause some international ripples as the Guatemalans refuse to agree to a Sarstoon protocol.

You can find a link to the article on our Facebook or 7News page.
