Dry Faucets Running on Hope in Northern Villages

For the 12th day straight villagers in Cristo Rey, Yo Chen and San Pedro still do not have water but tonight, there is a glimmer of hope.

Representatives from the Ministry of Local Government have signed on to an 8 point agreement with the village chairmen. The agreement undertakes to give greater transparency in the management of water board accounts. Once those accounts are reviewed at a meeting next week Monday in Orange Walk Town a final water rate will be agreed to. Sounds good, but the real kicker is this: water will not be restored until that meeting next week which means the 260 families in those three villages will, by then, have gone 19 days almost three weeks without water.
