'Inadvertent,' that is how the Ministry of Works today described a letter ordering the removal of a billboard at mile 27 on the Western Highway.

As we reported last night, on January 31st Chief Engineer Cadet Henderson wrote to F&G Insurance Company ordering them to immediately remove the billboard, which had been installed, in concert with the Ministry, in memory of the terrible road accident on January 20th 2003. Today Henderson told us the letter was mistakenly sent to F&G. He says it was an error by his teams out in the field.

After our story last night another letter was sent to F&G this morning apologizing for the inconvenience and expressing gratitude for erecting the sign. So the news is that the sign at mile 27 will stay there. Henderson told us what won't stay are the signs, bus stops, and even houses which are illegally on the side of highways. He appealed to businesses and the public at large to remove these signs because they are unsafe and just plain illegal. Billboards can only be placed on the roadside if they are on private property.
