It's been a long pregnant political promise - but when the southside project was delivered - no independent media was called to cover it. So what we give you tonight is from a government release. This morning at Gwen Lizarraga High, four contracts valued at over six million dollars were signed for phase one of the project. This will cover works for drainage, infrastructure, lot-filing and street paving in Lake Independence, Collet and Port Loyola. Works Minister Mike Espat gave a cursory overview.

Hon. Mike Espat, Minister of Works
"The southside poverty alleviation project is commencing today March the 21st 2007 with the signing of the four successful construction contracts for the implementation of drainage, infrastructure, the repair of streets on the southside of the Belize City area; Lake Independence, Collet, and Port Loyola."

The contracts were signed in the presence of area representatives and political officers. They were awarded to Lopez Equipment, BBB Heavy Equipment, M&R Construction, and A&N Construction. The lots that will be filled are those that retain water year round. Canals will also be built. Work should begin by the first April when the new fiscal year begins.
