There is a critical shortage of corn in Central America and the shortage was high on the agenda of a meeting of the regional Ministers of Agriculture held on Friday in San Pedro.
The meeting of the Central American Agricultural Council was hosted by Belize's Minister of Agriculture Vildo Marin. The Ministers of Agriculture discussed the corn shortage's implications for food security and at meeting's end a strategy to address it was drafted. The Ministers also signed a Belize Declaration which will address the needs for a regional agricultural policy, the harmonization of tariffs, and intellectual property rights.
