Help is pouring in for residents in the storm ravaged south and the flood threatened north. Scotia Bank has pledged $25,000 for housing assistance. The bank will also waive principal payment on loans for flood victims for up 4 months. The People’s United Party has pledged $10,000 which will come from the June salaries of its 6 members of the National Assembly. They’ve also asked for a commission of inquiry into what they call mismanagement of government’s response to the disaster.
The Red Cross and Salvation Army are also on the ground assisting. Red Cross’ Director General Lily Bowman told us this evening that the numbers are still being tabulated but they are assisting roughly two hundred families in the north and another 2 hundred families in the south. She says they have received generous amounts of clothes. They are however in dire need of more canned goods. You can drop off those canned goods and other grocery at the Red Cross’ office on Gabourel Lane at Red Cross offices throughout the country.
Donations of clothes can now be forwarded to the Salvation Army. It is estimated that 1,300 people were affected by the storm.
