There was a house fire on Mahogany Street on Saturday morning. Owing mostly to a good sized yard and quick response from the nearby fire service, it did not spread. But for the family that lived in the home, that is no consolation. Jacqueline Godwin has more.

Jacqueline Godwin Reporting,
From outside it looks like the fire was contained within the upper part of the three bedroom wooden structure but take one step inside the home of twenty five year old Feona Rhaburn and it’s clear that the flames devoured everything the family owned. Feona says she was home in the living room watching television with her young daughter when she first smelled something burning.

Feona Rhaburn, Fire Victim
“I smell like wire burning and then I cut off the TV, the fan, and

I thought it was the fan because it had tape around it so I cut it off and I was looking around the house to see if anything was on fire and then when I passed this room I saw smoke and then when I opened the door the place was already on fire.”

Feona who lives with her boyfriend and mother says they all tried to extinguish the blaze but it grew very quickly and there was nothing they could do but save their own lives.

Feona Rhaburn,
“I opened the door, I couldn’t do anything. I was trying to out it, I called my boyfriend and he told me just get the baby and leave. The

quickest we came out, the whole house came and there was no time to save nothing; no time.”

While Feona Rhaburn and her family try to recover from the great loss they have been receiving some help.

Feona Rhaburn,
“We have our neighbour across the street. We have other people, our family that are giving us assistance.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
And in terms of the house being replaced?

Feona Rhaburn,
“Well our Area Representative Sedi Elrington said he is going to give us assistance with that. You can replace stuff but you can’t replace life and all of us are okay so...”

Investigations are still ongoing to determine what started the fire. Jacqueline Godwin reporting for 7NEWS.
