The Police Department today received seven new motor bikes. It’s not quite a fleet, it’s more like a few, but it was still enough for a big production at the Ministry of National Security in Belmopan where the Minister of National Security Carlos Perdomo handed them over. Three of them will go to the Patrol Branch in Belize City, and one to Independence, Cayo, Punta Gorda, and Ladyville. Perdomo says the bikes will make the Department more fuel and response efficient.
Hon. Carlos Perdomo, Minister of National Security
“Motorcycles are a very flexible type of mobile vehicle and we will begin the police force to use them more often for patrolling, especially as we study our situation, the particular situation in Belize. You either have very large cities like Belize City with 50,000 to 60,000 people or you have communities that are very populated but they are populated along many miles, like stretches of the highway where we have villages and communities. Like for example in the Independence area, in the Placencia area, the San Ignacio area, in Ladyville, Lord’s Bank, Maxboro, Fresh Pond and so you need constant trafficking, constant patrolling, constant visibility and the motorcycle is quite adaptable to that kind of frequency of movement. It is cheaper to operate and we’ve found the type of bikes that can two people riding on it in order to give better service, more visibility, quicker response time, and patrolling. So this is one of our new ways that we will try to give better service to our communities.”
The bikes cost $22,000. The Police Department is awaiting a shipment of ten large motorbikes.
