A single mother and her three young children are homeless tonight after a frightening fire destroyed their home last night. It happened in the Holy Emmanuel Street area of Lake Independence. 20 year old Sisy Gonzalez says she was in her bedroom and her children were in theirs when she was awakened by their screams about a fire that started in their bedroom. She says the fire destroyed everything she owned.
Sisy Gonzalez, Fire Victim
“My daughter woke me up around one and shouting from her room that fire was there and when I went, the whole half of the room was on fire and I came in and I took my babies out when I came outside the whole house, half of it was totally destroyed by the fire and then it burnt all my things. I stayed without everything; whole of my clothes and everything burnt.”
Keith Swift,
“Yeah it looks like nothing is there,

everything is gone.”
Sisy Gonzalez,
“I am pleading to the community if they could help me and with the Department of Housing if they could help me and build back my house because my money, my documents, my baby’s uniform, my shoes, and everything – nothing I could have taken out because it quickly burnt up and destroyed everything.”
Keith Swift,
“Do you know what caused the fire?”
Sisy Gonzalez,
“One fish, to me a fish caused it because I put fish for them because too much mosquito is back here because we don’t have light and thing so to me it is the fish and maybe the babies, like how they went to sleep, they dropped a cloth or towel on it and that is how it started and ketch fire.”
Keith Swift,
“What do you need help with the most right now?”
Sisy Gonzalez,
“Right now I need help with get back my house and with clothes and things for my babies like that so my daughter can go back to school because she is five and she is in infant one and she needs to go back to school and she doesn’t have nothing.”
