It's not everyday you see 150 foot beams trucking on down the highway, but drivers on the Phillip Goldson Highway saw this impressive sight today. These bridge beams came south from Ladyville to the site of the new Haulover Bridge. The beams crawled across the existing Haulover Bridge and turned into the South construction site. Traffic was also reduced to a crawl and more so when a bus and a cargo truck got jammed on the bridge this afternoon - underscoring why a new bridge is so desperately needed. The two girders were also launched across the river - there are two of 7 which will eventually span a portion of the new bridge deck. Notices ave been sent out for boaters to go slow in the river as both the barge and crane are stationed in the middle of the water way for the duration of the week. The public is further advised to exercise extreme caution when approaching the transporting of these beams - which continues right through to July third. A release says, "Drivers are urged to follow the traffic signals and instructions of escorts at all times as these beams may take up the entire width of the highway, and the Existing Haulover Bridge." We'll have more eon this story tomorrow.
