We also asked Mai about the upcoming Zafra - which may be months away - but for two years now government has been unable to find a solution to the commercial impasse between ASR BSI and the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association. Tonight Caneros in the north are just 6 months away from the late 2023 season opening, and yet no closer to a resolution on the going rate for sugarcane.
It's an issue that the task force headed by Kareem Musa has been charged with working out expeditiously but, as of right now, with few results.
But this morning we got a chance to ask another of the ministers on the task force if he and his colleagues have a specific timeline for reporting their findings and perhaps leaning toward some solutions.
Abelardo Mai, Minister Of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise
"The committee that was supported by the Prime Minister and led by Mr Kareem Musa right now had submitted a verbal report to cabinet, where we were, that was interrupted by BSI now taking a, the regulations to court, um, the court, the judge, um, recommended that we continue to issue export permits for Sugar to BSI, to maintain the status co until the matter is - because BSI had applied for an injunction. That is where we are right now, stuck at that point, neverthless, and don't forget this, Cabinet had approved the Commission of inquiry, so that right now we are analyzing or studying how to move forward with the Comissioner of inquiry, the commission of inquiry has nothing to do with the application to the court for an injunction on the export permits for Sugar."
