Following the worst traffic tragedy in Belize's history on Saturday, two days ago the Ministry of Transport put out a limp press release, quote, "(urging) all road users to exercise extreme caution…"

Of course experience has shown us that many drivers use hardly any caution at all - which is why patrols are needed to ensure compliance.

The release also spoke about increasing patrols and vehicle checkpoints.

But, 7News has received credible information and a date stamped picture which show that the breathalysers remain in storage at the Department of Transport. This picture was taken today and shows them neatly stored on shelves.

We did ask the Chief Transport officer for a comment - but at newstime he had not responded to us. We also asked him about another reliable report which tells us that two of the Transport patrol vehicles are in the mechanic shop. for the past three weeks awaiting the approval of a purchase order to have their brakes fixed.

Again, we await comment on that.
