Williams also indicated that in another compromise contemplated by government - there is significant softening on the proposal to make training mandatory for motorcycle drivers.

It's an effort to create greater road safety - but it has been widely rejected as just another government tax on those who can least afford it.

Today, CEO Chester said the PM has heard those cries:

Chester Williams, CEO - Transport
"The prime minister, having listened to the concerns of Belizeans who have echoed some concerns in respect to the approach that we are taking have decided that, yes, we need to do some something to be able to help, these persons who are licensed motorcycle riders, as well potential motorcycle riders, to be able to, to get them trained."

"Again, it has been done in the spirit of saving lives. And so again, we have prepared a cabinet information about that will be going to cabinet next week likewise. And this paper is asking cabinet to see how, they will be able to look at the entire, process and see in what way the government can, can help."

"But the issue is that there may be some subsidy coming from government, on this issue, to be able to help those persons, who will be requiring the training to get the training. We have also looked at the, the category of persons who may be required to be trained."

"We have gone from five years to two years. So persons who are licensed riders or who, for five years with no infraction will not be required to take no training. Persons who are licensed riders with 2 to 5 years and have infraction, they will be required to undergo the training as well as new applicants, will also have to take the training persons at five or more years riding experience with license will also not be required to take the training. So that has tremendously reduced the amount of persons will be required to take the training under. I believe that it is a more reasonable approach."

"We are looking to see how we can move certain things and to make it more accommodating, while at the same time maintaining the spirit of training people who need to be trained."
