And while an apology may be in order, it doesn't seem like it will be enough to soothe the fires stoked by this conflict. Greg Choq of the Q’eqchi’ Council of Belize has now written a letter to the Prime Minister.
The letter which was copied to us late this evening says that the situation in Belmopan "has again reinforced the absolute urgency of addressing the plight of the Maya of Belize." He tells the Prime Minister that "it is imperative that he addresses the causes the lead to situations like Belmopan instead of attacking the symptoms." Choq closes the letter by asking for the Prime Minister to intervene to make sure the Mayas in the area are treated clearly, and, more broadly, to work towards an "amicable honorable and permanent solution to the plight of the Maya people." We note that the Prime Minister has proposed a ten-point plan of action which the Maya leaders have abandoned because they have concluded that the government is not serious.
