As we noted earlier 6 persons are vying for the post of two Deputy Leaders. They are, in alphabetical order, John Briceno, Joe Coye, Mike Espat, Sylvia Flores, Vildo Marin, Godfrey Smith. The winners will be decided tomorrow at a meeting of the party executive and they will be anointed with all the requisite 'que viva' fanfare at Sunday's National Convention in San Ignacio. And while she's been counted out, and even said to have pulled out, one player who's staying in the game is first term representative, Sylvia Flores. She today told Alfonso Noble, she's intent on being the first female Deputy Leader of the PUP.
Sylvia Flores, Candidate for PUP Deputy Leader
"Well I think I have a good chance. When we look at the representation of women going to the convention I would feel that they have an agenda that they need to promote and that is for equal participation of women, at all levels of our party. It should not be that we are relegated just to the base of the hierarchy, I think we have adequate responsibility to our women as well."
Alfonso Noble,
You think as a woman you will be given that fair chance? We all know about the People's United Party and their guided democracy, do you feel you'll be given a fair chance?
Sylvia Flores,
"I would hope so you know. I am never fully cognizant of all that's happening that will totally diminish my reality of running. I just feel I have an opportunity and so I look forward to being elected."
Feverish campaigning to the 161 delegates from the executive continues tonight surely with a few added friendly calls from the Prime Minister and Party Leader Said Musa who returned to the country this afternoon.
