He was twice elected UDP Mayor in Benque Viejo Town, but despite that success at the polls, Said 'Badi' Guerra was soundly defeated in a party convention yesterday. As the incumbent mayor, Guerra faced off against former UDP town councilor Marconi Sosa. When the votes were tallied, Sosa had 558 votes while Guerra only had 170.
As we noted, Sosa is a former town councilor and gained fame when he sat in the middle of the road to face off the dragon unit, when taxi drivers protested in 1999.
Guerra first emerged in 2002, when he won a Mayoral bye-election to take the place of his father who had died. That was a split council with a UDP majority, but under Guerra's leadership, in the 2003 election it went to an all UDP Town Board. With his defeat now, the UDP has replaced two of its three mayors as it heads into next year's municipal election. The first to go was San Ignacio's Alfonso Cruz.
