It's 1,100 feet of street whose paving almost split the UDP City Council and this evening the final paving work on Banak was being done by workers for independent contractor Cuthbert Bailey in the presence of his friend, associate and advisor to the City Council Edmund Castro. Tomorrow, the street will be officially opened with, we are told, some fanfare.
So tonight while the good news for the UDP is that the work on Banak Street is finished, the bad news may be, that the fight over it isn't quite done yet. We say not yet because the council is still split over the awarding of the contract. As councilor with responsibility for streets Anthony Michael told us, he gave the mayor three tenders and she awarded it to a fourth person not included amongst his tenders. And while the can be a procedural difference, the real dispute may be over the bottom line on the contract which we are told is somewhat more than what the city's internal assessment costed it at.
In related news, we are informed that mayor Zenaida Moya has withdrawn her name from the bidding for party chairman.
