It's not the best week ever for Minister of Tourism, Broadcasting and Information Godfrey Smith as two of his chairmen have resigned.
The chair of the Broadcasting Authority Sylvana Woods resigned yesterday after Cabinet balked at new cable and broadcast policies Smith took to Cabinet on Tuesday. Cabinet asked for more time to review the policy papers which seek to impose new standards on broadcast, radio and cable operators. Woods is of the opinion that government was not serious about taking on the proposals, which were the result of years of work and consultation.
In what may be a more high profile, but less publicized resignation, Chairman of the Belize Tourism Board Therese Rath has resigned her post effective this week. Rath had been Chairman for six years. But unlike the Woods move, Rath said it is a personal decision to make time for her family and her businesses. She will stay on as a member of the board.
In slightly less glamorous news from Smith's Ministry of Information, Mike Rudon - the point man in the Ministry of Information has also resigned or possibly defected from the Smith camp to the Briceno camp. Rudon, a government contract officer used as a low merit political sniper in election season, has left the Ministry of Information and gone to work for Centaur Communications, Deputy Prime Minister Johnny Briceno family's cable, television and radio enterprise in Orange Walk.
