The standoff is over; the DPP will be reviewing files from the Police Department. That's the upshot of a phone call between the Attorney General and the DPP and the government is tonight hoping that the telephone truce will restore public confidence in the justice system.
Today Attorney General Francis Fonseca and DPP Kirk Anderson, who is still away, spoke on the phone and agreed to retract his hard line and continue to review files from the Police Department. That phone call is referred to as 'discussions' in a government press release which says, "the DPP has directed his office to resume full contact and cooperation with the Belize Police Department." It continues to say that: "all criminal files and pending advice...from the office...will continue to be dealt with in a timely and professional manner."
The release concludes by saying that the Prime Minister will meet with all the parties next week to ensure continued good relations. We assume Anderson will be returning from his leave for that meeting as he is officially scheduled to be out of office until September fourth.
