After the town board devastation of 2006, Punta Gorda would have to be called a PUP stronghold, in relative terms at least. That's the only town where there is a PUP Mayor, Carlos Obeah Galvez and a councilor. That's two, but soon, there may be three, or at least three-opposed-to-the-UDP majority.
That's because the UDP has told one of its councilors, will Galvez to resign from the party. Will, it should be noted, is the UDP brother of PUP Mayor Obeah Galvez. The UDP has called for his resignation after Galvez wrote a letter to the media last week, which was published in The Belize Times, complaining about the conduct of his own UDP Deputy Mayor Floyd Lino.
If Galvez resigns or if he is eventually expelled from the UDP, that would leave the Punta Gorda Town Council in a 4 - 3 power split with the UDP having the majority.
