It's been rumored for months that the retiring Florencio Marin Sr. will resurrect his political career, switch divisions and replace Greg Garcia for the PUP in the Corozal Southwest Division. And while it had been nothing more than a widely bantered political yarn for all those months, 7NEWS has confirmed that this weekend there was an exploratory meeting to discuss the possibilities.
The meeting was reportedly held at the home of Marin loyalist, Ramiro Ramirez who had previously challenged Garcia and lost. According to the Briceno owned CTV-3 in Orange Walk, Marin Sr. declared his intention to contest Gregorio Garcia in the area. According to our sources, it didn't go quite that far, but, its news enough that there are rumblings of an organized plan to take out Garcia.
In an interview with CTV-3, Garcia referred to malcontents within his party. Of course, what underpins all this, is the fact that the UDP standard bearer in that division, Gabriel Martinez swept all 8 contests in the recent village council elections, indicating very dim prospects for any PUP challenger.
Observers say that for the PUP, it would probably be wiser to cut its losses rather than face the public rift associated with the alienation of Greg Garcia and his wife Narda Garcia, but, these days, you can never tell what number's gonna play - so we'll keep watching.
