Last week the Mayor's Association told the Prime Minister to basically "run the money" for September celebrations. Well yesterday, three days after the tenth of September, he did but it wasn't what they expected. While last year most councils got $20,000, this year they got only $5,000. Belize City Mayor Zenaida Moya confirmed to us that she got $10,000. Belmopan Mayor Simeon Lopez called to tell us he only got $5,000. He says that when he checked with the Prime Minister's Office - they told him that his council got $20,000 last year because it was the 25th anniversary celebration.
The municipalities are in charge of logistics for September celebration events. All the mayors they've accepted the checks but will determine their next move at an association meeting scheduled for tomorrow.
