When is the general election? Tonight that's a question that everyone has an answer to. But truth is, only the prime minister can speak authoritatively on it and we're not sure that even he knows. Still, the conventional wisdom says that his State of the Nation Address foreshadowed a 2007 election. And that's what PUP Deputy Leader Godfrey Smith says he's preparing for.
Hon. Godfrey Smith,
"I have to be prepared for anytime. I am obviously preparing for this year because it is possible that it could be this year so I can't say I really think its next year but there is a chance it could be this year so I'll plan for next year. No, so I have to plan as if it's going to be November or December."
Jules Vasquez,
As Deputy Party Leader of the PUP, you don't have a strong indication of when elections will be?
Hon. Godfrey Smith,
"I do not. But please, that's not some sort of unusual situation. Prime Ministers would labor on these things, some of them will pray on it, they will contemplate it, thinking about it. It is not a thing where unless you are very very certain that you want to lose, that you want to move that you call people in and discuss it. At this time it is all speculation."
As regards election preparation, it's of note that this week, both PUP Leader Musa and Dean Barrow were seen on the ground campaigning in their divisions.
