We started the news talking about politics and the first meeting of Prime Minister Dean Barrow’s Cabinet- and we end talking about the hard politic-king going into the election of a new leader of the PUP. The leadership convention is set for the end of March, but the jostling is in full fevered swing. And tonight, the news is that Godfrey Smith – who is Francis Fonseca’s campaign manager will reportedly decline the seat offered to him on the Senate.

Former Prime Minister Musa had declared him one of the party’s 3 senatorial nominees when the party met last week but now our reports say Smith is refusing that. And why? Well it’s not because he’s trying to turn down the outgoing party leader. In fact, he’s trying to court favour of the out district candidates –particularly those in Cayo. As we understand it, Smith has advised those in Cayo – that he will recommend that the senatorial appointments be less Belize City-centred and that they include someone from the outer districts. And he would give up his appointment to achieve that in exchange for the expectation of support for his candidate Francis Fonseca.

There are 500-plus or so delegates – and many are concentrated in the larger divisions which are out district.
