On March 13th, BEL requested an average increase of 15% on your light bill, and today was the last day to submit written objections. Two have been sent out to the press.
Area representatives for two sou8thside divisions Mark Espat and Cordel Hyde write on behalf of the 8,400 constituents and note what they call, “a strident objection.” They argue that the proposed increase is unacceptable for a company whose net profit for 2007 is projected at $30 million. They also lament that the poorest Belizeans who use less than 50 kilowatt hours per month will see their light bills go up by 25%.
The National Teachers’ Union has also written to the PUC objecting to the increase with some detail, and we’ll tell you the grounds for their objections in tomorrow’s newscast.
