Powered by the people, that was Zenaida Moya’s campaign slogan and it proved prophetic, because against the will of the party’s political base, she secured a decisive convention victory. – earning a thousand more votes than any of the other 35 candidates – which is uncanny. But that kind of power comes from more than just the people, it comes from a muscular and well oiled campaign machinery which is best lubricated by cash, and lots of it. From what we saw outwardly, Moya’s campaign seemed better funded. Additionally, there are rumours that some senior players had her back, especially if it would in any way injure or embarrass the party leadership. Sounds like a possible plan, but, yesterday she told us that just like her power, her funding came from the people.

Zenaida Moya,
“Going up against different area reps that there was a whole lot of resources, a whole lot of resources coming at me. It feels good to have defeated against all odds. It feels good and I really want to thank the people that you know came out and genuinely supported me and did not allow those resources to take away the votes from me.”

Jules Vasquez,
Your campaign didn’t look exactly impoverished on convention day. You had what appeared to be the most muscular campaign out there, the most vehicles, the most posters, the most shirts. You had good funding, good organization.

Zenaida Moya,
“I will be frank with you. A number of persons, they genuinely came, they donated some things like banners, vehicles, you name it and they were donated and I want to thank those people. They were there for me and I guess they saw that I needed the help.”

Later on, we’ll have more after burn form the biggest convention ever as we speak with Eric Chang, the first Taiwanese Belizean to seek political office in Belize.
