Francis Fonseca, he was the Attorney General who witnessed every secret document signed by then Prime Minister Said Musa, and he was also the Old Guard’s choice to take over the PUP from Said Musa and his cousin Ralph. But when that seamless transition failed in March, Fonseca became a man in the middle, qualified to be part of the New Guard, but yoked inevitably to the Old.
And so when he appeared at the PUP’s Corozal Southeast Division’s rebel convention on Sunday along with Said Musa and Vildo Marin, he was designated for a special letter of reprimand from the Party Leader. But Fonseca won’t take it sitting down. He today issued a statement saying that his Freetown Chairperson was never invited to the meeting at Independence Hall on Tuesday and he concludes, “the appearance...is that those who once cloaked themselves with the principles of natural justice now seek to deny others that right.”
And as for the party’s decision to appoint a special committee to review the conduct of PUP officials in the last ten years, his advice to Briceno sounds a lot like, “noh watch me, watch yuh self.” In his statement he advises Briceno that he welcomes the PUP’s Special Committee which will review party and government conduct over the past ten years, but warns him that, “I trust that those who seek to question are also prepared to answer for their actions and decisions.” He adds that, “I see the threat of legal actions against former party officers as petty, means spirited and unbecoming.”
Strong talk from a deeply divided party whose six elected representatives are now completely squared off against each other: Briceno, Espat and Hyde versus Musa, Fonseca and Marin Jr. Former Party Leader Said Musa also issued a statement today defending his actions in securing the Venezuelan money and that will air as an ad later on in this newscast.
