As alluded to in the story, the judgment for the citrus industry sets a precedent for other associations in other sectors – most notably the sugar industry where the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association is similarly protected in the law. That’s why the attorney for the United Cane Farmers Association Hubert Elrington was listening in when the judgment was presented this morning. He says that United doesn’t even have to go to court, because that too is automatically unconstitutional.

“Our claim is very similar to what came up today and this vindicates what we have been saying. So now everybody will understand that the way forward is let us sit down and negotiate. We don’t have to come to court to decide these matters. We have three judges, they are eminent lawyers, but we have more than three eminent lawyers. We should sit down and solve our problems before running into court every time we have a problem.”
