There is a new temporary President of the Senate - he is the well-known owner of Chon Saan, Lee Mark Chang. The 37 year old Chang was sworn in this morning at a regular sitting of the upper house. There is some history here as Chang becomes the first Belizean Chinese member of either house in the National Assembly. Though his parents are immigrants, Chang is Belizean born.

Chang is holding over for Senate President Andrea Gill who is on maternity leave. He will serve for only a few months. His family and friends were in the gallery to witness this bit of history.

He was joined by another newcomer taking the oath. Former radio personality and Dangriga Mayor Frank "Pawpa" Mena was sworn in as a UDP senator. His appointment is not temporary as he takes over a full appointment from Eddie Webster who is now the clerk of the National Assembly and who administered the oath.
