Three political conventions were held this weekend - but only one was contested - and the result of that one was very consequential as another UDP area representative has been toppled. And that was in Corozal North where Area Rep Nemencio Acosta was soundly defeated by newcomer Hugo Patt.
Patt got 1140 votes while Acosta received 519. Two others, Geraldo Vallejos received 443 votes, while Guadalupe Longsworth got 143 votes.
Patt, who is currently the chairman of the Sugar Industry Control Board is seen as a Gaspar Vega loyalist - and he holds the job that Acosta once held.
Reports suggest that Acosta - who is now another lame duck representative - emerges from the convention displeased with his party - so we'll see how that plays out.
The other conventions were endorsements: for the PUP, Francis Smith was sworn in as the standard bearer for Pickstock in an event at Independence Hall and for the UDP, Deputy Leader Gaspar Vega was endorsed for Orange Walk North.
