It was made official this morning Election day is November 11th, 2020.

And this time the fate of the nation may be decided by the 34.7% of the voting public that is under 30.

If they go out to vote, it's a reality that could change the dynamics of politics as we know it.

And to key in on that demographic the Department of Youth Services is following in the footsteps of Trinidad and Jamaica to Launch Belize's version of the Youth Votes Matter campaign.

We got the low down on tonight's Launch and the campaign's goals from Media representative Bryton Codd.

Bryton Codd, Media Representative, Youth Votes Matter
"The youth votes matter initiative is one which originated in Trinidad following their elections in early August and then it continued to Jamaica following their general elections and now it's in Belize. The Youth votes initiative is one which gears to broaden the understanding of the political landscape amongst young people and as such a consortium of young people has come together under the banner of Civic responsibility to ensure that our ideas, concerns, and interests are presented to and discussed with policy experts as well as political representatives. It is important that we begin to engage more actively in the electoral process and understand that Democracy is not just on election day and as such we decided to take up the mantle and take forward this campaign within our country."

"It's launching tonight at 8 o'clock on the youth voice live on Facebook and it will also be shared on Love Fm and on Thursdays in the morning we will be having sessions with Love FM to cover the discussions that will be happening with political guests as well as the policy experts."

"We have young people in different capacities throughout this country part of youth councils, youth arms, but we have not found a way to unify our voices and as such, we thought it was important that one month before the General elections that we continue to engage young people to understand the political landscape so indeed we did start a bit late however there is still time to educate young people about the political landscape."

You can tune in to the Youth Voice Live Facebook page at 8pm tonight for the first of several Youth Votes Matter live sessions.
