Yesterday's event was also an opportunity for the PUP and Chairman Henry Charles to announce that he has been officially installed as their standard-bearer for the Fort George constituency.

As has been widely reported, he will replace his father, former Prime Minister Said Musa, who had to step down from politics due to health reasons. Here are his comments on that transition:

Henry Charles Usher - Chairman, PUP
"I'm proud to also say that team 31 is ready. Yes, our 31 standard bearers have been meeting with the people. Earlier this week, the Secretary-General swore me in as the standard-bearer for the Fort George division."

"I want to thank the people of Fort George for the support they have given me, and the trust they have placed in me. I'm humbled by it. Now the torch has been passed, and it's time for a new generation to blaze our fire."

Thank the Taiwanese Ambassador

On October 10th, 5 days from now, the government and people Taiwan, formally known as of the Republic of China, will be celebrating their 109th National Day.

Here in Belize, the Taiwanese Embassy would have hosted a National Day Reception as a part of their effort to get Belizeans to join in on the festivities. But, because of all the COVID-19 restrictions, that event cannot happen.

So instead, the Taiwanese Embassy is hoping to get their Belizean friends involved by hosting 2 virtual events. In one of these campaigns, which will make use of Facebook, the Embassy wants Belizeans to take pictures with any element of Taiwanese culture that has been assimilated into our society. If you meet their criteria, you can a win free prize for your participation.

This evening, the Taiwanese Ambassador told us how it will work:

Again, if a Belizean participates in the photograph campaign, and if they get more than 10 likes on their post, the first 109 participants will each get a Made-in-Taiwan electronic product, valued at 60 Belize dollars, as a souvenir from the Embassy.

Hurricane Delta Will Slip Past Belize

Another Hurricane has formed in the Caribbean.

Hurricane Delta is currently located over the Central Caribbean Sea just south of Jamaica. NEMO says the impact on Belize from this system should be minimal. Still, NEMO advises the public to remain vigilant and continue to monitor the system. Hurricane Delta is in our zone and these systems can be unpredictable so it must be monitored closely.

It is now moving to the west-northwest at 8 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 75mph. Forecast models agree that the hurricane is expected to be near the Cayman Islands on Tuesday morning and then approach the western tip of Cuba late on Tuesday as a Category 1 Hurricane or stronger.
