And, so while COVID is even factoring into nomination day - when 1 of about 90 candidates is known to be infected - what about election when, possibly as many as one thousand persons out of 180 thousand registered electors will have active infections?
Who will police that?
The Commissioner says: the community and good gossip:
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Bwoy you know the good thing about Belize you have a lot of nosey people, right. So even though we don't have the list the nosey neighbor will know and the nosey neighbor will tell the police. And believe you me 100% of the time when the nosey neighbor says my neighbor is COVID positive and he's walking around. Wouldn't you know it's through the neighbor the neighbors are going to be the eyes and ears of the police and anyone who is found breaching quarantine or breaching isolation they're going to be dealt with. You have to understand that while yes we all have the right to vote that, that right must not trump the right of others to be healthy and the right of others to avoid being infected by you so at the end of the day we are going to do what needs to be done to ensure that whatever the law is that it is carried through."
