The UDP also lamented the termination of open vote workers in the transport department. As we told, last weekend 25 in the city and three times that in the districts were sent home. The PUP made no bones about it; they say that they had to fire these UDP supporters - who - they contend were phantom workers - and because they had to make space for their own.
Today, the UDP's Shadow Minister for Infrastructure Development and Housing said those workers can sue for discrimination:
Erson "OJ" Elrington "Just last week Saturday alone, on one single day, in one single government department over 80 persons lost their jobs. Why? What is their crime? What is the singular crime that all of them have in common? They are not PUP stalwart supporters I think because some of them are PUP supporters but maybe they did not wave their blue and white flag enough but some of them are UDP supporters but whatever it is, it is that our constitution provides protection that person cannot be discriminated against because of their political affiliations. There is a practical approach that every person who feels that they can take, this is a simple legal solution which I will offer to those persons who might have been fired. They can approach the labour department and lodge a claim, not a claim that they have been fired and they simply want to hear how much they are due for severance but a claim that they have been fired based on discrimination."
