Last night, we told you about the United Democratic Party's complaint against the Briceno Government's decision to reassign senior diplomat Ambassador Alexis Rosado from his post as Belize's Ambassador to Guatemala. The Government has decided that he can better serve in Belgium, as the ambassador-designate to the European Union, and the Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States.
The UDP thinks that this new post will, quote, "substantially compromise his ability to focus on his duties as a Co-Agent" of Belize in the resolution of the long-standing territorial claim over our country. As viewers are aware, preparations are being made for that territorial dispute to be heard at the International Court of Justice.
Well, we contacted Foreign Affairs Minister Eamon Courtenay for comment on their objections, and he told us that the UDP is mistaken. He says that it is actually a beneficial move.
He told us, quote, "Ambassador Rosado's posting to Brussels places him close to The Hague, the seat of the Court, and other European capitals where our legal team is based and where further research is being undertaken as we draft Belize's counter-memorial. The assignment was made after careful strategic consideration." End quote.
