Another motion that was passed in the Senate this morning is the resolution authorizing Belize to ratify the Framework Agreement on the Establishment of the International Solar Alliance (ISA).

A group of countries, led by France and India, has convinced other sister nations to join them on a shift to solar energy as the world's main source of power. One of the main objectives of the Alliance is to promote and work for efficient consumption of solar energy, and thus reduce the world's dependence on fossil fuels.

Today, the Leader of Government business told his colleagues that the Briceno Administration wants to move Belize in that direction as well. Here's that part of the Senate Meeting:

Hon. Eamon Courtenay - Leader of Government Business
"Madam President, very briefly, should I say that the High Commissioner of India to Belize recently visited Belize and strongly urged the government to join the International Solar Alliance, which was created and promoted primarily by France and India in 2015. It was, Madam President, an alliance that has, as its goal, to set rules and norms for the massive deployment of renewable energy. And in fact, there are more than 120 countries that are members of the Alliance. The target of the Alliance is to have 450 gigawatts of renewable energy by the year 2030. Madam President, again, one of the objectives of the Government is to move substantially toward more renewable energy in Belize, primarily using solar power, but also exploring wind and other renewable resources. Madam President, we commend the resolution to the Senate."

Hon. Michael Peyrefitte - UDP Senator
"The Opposition has no difficulty with the framework agreement, Madam President. We support the framework agreement, especially since in article 11 if we ever want to withdraw, we can do it, and 3 months' notice and we're out of it, if we're not happy."
