The Government has given the joint unions its proposed schedule of tiered pay cuts - and tonight we can tell you what they are.

A letter from the Minister of Public Service, Henry Charles Usher to the joint union heads says he has under consideration the following proposals:

Public officers and teachers making $12,000 - $20,000 annually would get an 8% pay reduction;

Those making 20,000-40,000 would get a 10% reduction And those making 40,000 and higher would get a 12% reduction.

Added to this, housing and entertainment allowance would be reduced by 25%; and increments would be frozen for three years.

He adds that government is prepared to pass a bill to waive the assignment of residential mortgages of public officers.

He adds that these proposed cuts would be reviewed annually to see if they can be reduced, depending on how the economy is performing.

Of these Government counter measures Usher says, quote, "which I might decide to advise the governor general to implement after I have received and considered your responses to the above."

He tells them that he needs their response to his pay cut proposals in writing by midday on April 20th.
