Earlier this week we told you that it was no jab, no job for public officers. Starting December 15th, they have to show their vaccination card or they will be marked absent from work and dealt with disciplinarily. Though we've asked the president of the PSU for comment, he's been mum, but today he sent out a newsletter about various issues, one of them titled, "Vaccine Dictatorship By The Ministry of Public Service."
He writes that there was no consultation with the PSU on this decision and that the union cannot support a vaccine mandate. The release continues, quote, "It is not lost on the Union that whilst Government continues to rule with an iron fist over Public Officers, it lacks testicular fortitude to address mandatory Covid19 vaccination in the Private Sector and General Public. Another reminder to Public Sector Workers that this Administration is more concerned with rewarding and appeasing its political financiers, than addressing the Covid-19 pandemic in a holistic and all-inclusive approach. While the Union acknowledges that fundamental rights are not absolute rights, it does not mean that an individual right to choose what enters his or her body can be arbitrarily curtailed according to bureaucratic or legislative discretion." End quote.
The PSU is now calling on the ministry to recall the circular and continue to allow for the provision of a negative PCR or rapid test.
