And while the Mayor is singing Kaya Cattouse's praises, the city residents may justifiably feel that the council is on a taxation spree.
This afternoon Cherisse Halsall reminded him that all these minor tax adjustments are starting to add up. Here's his response.
Cherisse Halsall:
"Property tax has been raised; you are attempting to charge a garbage fee. With the cemetery tax, you've even raised the tax on the dead and the question is are you running the council like a bank, profits above people?"
Bernard Wagner, Mayor, Belize City
"No, it's never about profits. We could never speak about profits, at the city council it's about a balancing act each and every day. From since 2018 we have been performing a balancing act. Unlike the previous councils that were there that received assistance from the government. While I was there in 2018, not one day did I ever go to government for assistance and so I can't really agree with you there."
We'll have more from this extended interview with Wagner tomorrow night when we talk to him about the raise to the rate of property tax.
