Of course, that's just round one - because the former Prime Minister also has his own lawsuit against the Commission of Inquiry.
Dean Barrow's attorney, his niece Naima Barrow, has argued before Justice Lisa Shoman that he should be granted an award of damages which should be as high as 450 thousand dollars. Ms. Barrow attempted to convince the court that the Commission's indictment of the Former PM was far more damning, and that the court must be mindful of the public reputation he had before the publishing of the Commission's report.
We asked Barrow about his case, and he told us that the court indicated today that the judgment in his lawsuit should be handed down sometime next week:
Dean Barrow, SC - Claimant
"Well, the judge will give her decision in my matter [on] Tuesday or Wednesday. Remember that she didn't do it at the same time, or she didn't give judgment at the same time as she gave judgment in the Patt matter because there was this difference. In Patt, we had already agreed with the other side as to all that needed to come out of the Commission's report, all the references to Patt that needed to be taken out, that needed to be excised, that needed to be redacted, if you will. In my case, my lawyer, Naima Barrow, could not agree with the other side. They were saying whether ABCD has to, of which he said no, no, more than that has to go about. And ultimately, her proposition was the entire report should, in fact, be struck down precisely. And so, the judge had that additional and important aspect to examine and write a decision on. So, it's a larger undertaking. It's a greater exercise than the exercise you had to perform in Hugo Patt's matter, and that's why And that's why I think that judgment is coming a few days after the one today."
Former PM Barrow anticipates that the Briceno Government will most likely launch an appeal against the quantum of the award in damages to Hugo Patt.
