While we had the opportunity today, we asked Andrew Marshalleck about the public disclosures in these documents. Here's what he had to say when we asked about it as the current managing partner of Barrow & Company:
Daniel Ortiz
"I have to ask you about the former Prime Minister's suggestion that you are currently acting as the current prime minister's favorite lawyer. That was his word choice. What do you make of that in light of the disclosures for what the former administration paid to the law firm for which you are now the managing partner, sir?"
E. Andrew Marshalleck, SC - Managing Partner, Barrow & Company
"Well, that's a deflection, and you should recognize that. I am engaged by the Government in a handful of cases, but nowhere near what it used to be."
Daniel Ortiz
"Okay, for you as a professional, sir, and the other partners who make up this law firm and the employees you all hire, It must be distressing that the suggestion from the ruling Government is that your law firm was overpaid for services - like you don't deserve it sort of deal."
E. Andrew Marshalleck, SC
"The thing is, we have no involvement in, or control over that. That is something completely beyond our control. I have certain matters I work on, and there are clients that I charge for my services, and that's how I'm paid. I don't get to focus on the rest of it. That's not how it works. It's unfortunate that those allegations are being made. I, for one - there's always been Chinese walls within our organization because coming into the Barrow Administration, we were doing a lot of work for the Ashcroft Group."
Daniel Ortiz
"Okay."
E. Andrew Marshalleck, SC
"And then, when there was that change and that shift, Mr. Barrow was representing the Government. I, having acted on the other side on a lot of these matters, there were Chinese when I was created to insulate us from."
Daniel Ortiz
"Conflict of interest, right?."
E. Andrew Marshalleck, SC
"Yes. So we really - I really had nothing to do with any of that."
Marshalleck tells us that his law firm is currently representing the government in a handful of cases and not anywhere on the scale of the former government.
