John Saldivar may be down but he's not out. His party leader has stripped him of his posts as Belmopan caretaker and regional coordinator - and the Special Committee told he him he cannot run for Belmopan. But, Saldivar has always said, the final decision on his future with the UDP rests with the National Party Council and he has succeeded in getting together the signatures necessary to trigger an emergency meeting of the NPC.
7News has learned that the NPC will meet via Zoom on Saturday 17th December. An internal party notice says, the meeting will be to, quote, "consider the single item of the Special Committee's decision to disallow the Candidacy of John Saldivar in the best interest of the Party." End quote.
So, the race for the next 11 days now is to see if Saldivar can muster a majority of the 120 or so members of the NPC to vote in his favor and keep him alive until a Belmopan convention is held. He is expected to rely heavily on his Caucus for Change for support in their divisions. We'll keep following to let you know how it goes.
