Ruth Shoman took over the presidency of the Belize National Teachers Union today and she has received a warm welcome from a faction of the membership.

After a move to block her at the Executive Council failed, they today sent out a press release to coincide with her assumption of office. It questions her eligibility to hold this office.

It points to past criminal court cases which Shoman has been involved in and also calls into question whether she was a teacher in active service. They say she has presented no documentation of this.

A release says, quote, "We must address this and other grave concerns that threaten the core values of our organization."

So, what is this faction going to do about it? Well, they have created a petition which is being sent to all members and additionally say they will file a court case for judicial review.
