And while that was the UDP's political spectacle, the PUP had its one last week with the 11th amendment. They created a public furor when they held the Constitution and Foreign Affairs Committee meeting on Thursday, during which they unanimously voted that the 11th amendment would be suddenly taken back to the House- after it had been temporarily set aside to let the People's Constitutional Committee do its work.
However the next day, after it went for second reading, was debated, and voted on, it ended up not going to the third and final reading. Instead, it was "stayed" in the Committee of the Whole House. So did the PUP really have any intentions of tabling the amendment? Or was it all a show to retaliate against Barrow for his no confidence motion?
Regardless, yesterday Barrow told us he was ready to take it to court.
Shyne Barrow, UDP Leader
"They withdrew it. I was prepared to go to court tomorrow, but they withdrew it. I know that the independent senators do not support it as I have explained to you and there is great public outrage from many pockets of the society, but that type of victimization, that type of weaponization of the constitution is the epiphany of the PUP is. They are vindictive, vitious government that don't care about the Belizean people. They don't care about the constitution and so they are willing to do anything to hold on to power."
