And while the union looks to fill the post of president, the UDP will soon be looking for a new standard bearer and executive for its Belize Rural South seat in San Pedro.
As we showed you yesterday, the opposition embarrassingly had to import a Belize City crowd to San Pedro to stage a protest. That's after the Belize Rural South executive publicly renounced the protest. Without that homegrown support, the protest plodded on, but it ultimately fizzled because it never reached it's intended staging ground - the Grand Caribe Resort where they were hosting the Investment Summit - that's after police blockaded the bridge.
While that may have been somewhat embarrassing for the UDP, it is not on par with the shame of having a constituency executive refusing to support its own party on its home ground.
And, the retribution from party leader Shyne Barrow has been swift and decisive - which is why tonight members of that executive are bracing for the Barrow boot. The Party Secretariat called a Central Executive meeting today with the sole business of passing a resolution to remove the Belize Rural South Standard Bearer, Jazeli Azueta, any member of her Executive who, quote, "sanctioned and published the public statement injuring the Party." That refers to a Facebook post the divisional executive made yesterday. That virtual meeting was held today and lasted less than five minutes we are told - it was basically a formality.
They move now to an emergency meeting of the National Party Council which is being asked to support a resolution to remove Azueta and any of her Executive associated with the Facebook post. That meeting will be held tomorrow morning, also virtually.
