And while the north has been thrown from chaos to calm over the past few days, the UDP has watched it all unfold as the PUP's staunchest supporters fire insults at them.

Yesterday the Leader of the Opposition said that the cane crisis is the fault of the government who he believes has made "false promises" to the caneros. And he also added that if they were in power, they'd have a solution to the problem.

Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition

"When the UDP forms the next government, we will roll up our sleeves and solve these issues, they can be solved. Again, it is impossible to solve if you're lying to people and we are not lying to anyone. We are not making any false promises to anyone. What I can say is that the UDP puts Belize first, the UDP holds the cane farmers as the highest priority in any negotiation."

"There is a division in the PUP, there is division within the community of Caneros because while there are some that want to go in one direction there is a particular group that feels betrayed that feels lied to, that feels bamboozled by the PUP and that is why they've taken to the streets, that is why they're preventing Abelardo Mai from leaving from now and they're saying that John Briceno does not have the testicular fortitude to face them, which is why he fled to Italy."
